Vienna and the east

Best for Imperial history, music, museums, and wine

Vienna needs several days arranged by historic center, museum districts, palaces, and neighborhoods. The Wachau Valley or Bratislava can be a separate extension.

Salzburg and Salzkammergut

Best for Baroque streets, lakes, music, and scenic day trips

Salzburg is compact but rewards an overnight stay. Lake towns such as Hallstatt require realistic train, bus, or boat connections and are better outside peak day-trip hours.

Tyrol and the Alps

Best for Hiking, skiing, mountain railways, and villages

Innsbruck provides a practical rail base, while resort valleys depend on season. Mountain lifts, trails, and snow conditions must be checked locally.

When to go

Late spring through early autumn supports city and hiking combinations, while winter centers on seasonal markets and snow regions. Shoulder months can be quiet but some mountain lifts and lakeside businesses pause between seasons.

Getting around

ÖBB trains connect Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, and many regional gateways. Rural lake and valley routes may add buses or boats. A car helps with selected countryside loops but is unnecessary in the major cities.

Before you go

Reserve high-demand palace entries and important trains, check lift operating calendars, and do not assume a mountain attraction is open between summer and winter seasons. Carry a wet-weather city plan for Alpine days.
