Plan the country, not a checklist

How to shape a first China trip

China's scale demands a corridor-based itinerary. Beijing plus one other region is a strong first trip; adding Shanghai, Xi'an, the southwest, and the south all at once turns the journey into a chain of stations and airports.

Beijing and northern heritage

Best for Imperial history, museums, and the Great Wall

Beijing needs several days because major sites are large and spread out. Choose one Great Wall section and keep museum reservation requirements in the plan.

Shanghai and the lower Yangtze

Best for Modern cities, gardens, canals, and food

Shanghai pairs naturally with Hangzhou, Suzhou, or Nanjing by fast rail. Use one main base or a short linear sequence rather than changing hotels daily.

Xi'an, Sichuan, and the southwest

Best for Archaeology, cuisine, mountains, and varied landscapes

Xi'an and Chengdu are strong inland anchors. Guilin, Yunnan, or Zhangjiajie require additional travel days and should be selected as distinct extensions.

Realistic route ideas

Match the route to the time you actually have

These are planning frameworks, not rigid schedules. Use the shorter option when arrival and departure days consume much of the trip.

  1. 01

    5–7 days

    Beijing in depth

Focus on Beijing with one Great Wall day and enough time for the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, hutongs, and contemporary neighborhoods.

  2. 02

    9–11 days

    Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai

Use high-speed rail or one domestic flight, with at least three nights in Beijing and two full days in each later city.

  3. 03

    14 days

    Classic cities plus one landscape

Add Chengdu, Guilin, or another single region while protecting full travel days for the longest transfers.

Before the bookings

Practical decisions that change the itinerary

When to go

Conditions vary from northern winters to humid southern summers. Spring and autumn often suit the classic Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai corridor, while national holiday periods can create exceptional transport and attraction demand.

Getting around

High-speed trains connect many major cities and stations can be very large. Confirm the exact station, allow security and boarding time, and keep passport details consistent with bookings. City metros are often the most predictable local option.

Before you go

Check entry, transit, payment, mobile connectivity, and app requirements through current official channels before departure. Reserve high-demand museums and trains when booking windows open, and keep translated hotel details available offline.

First-trip questions

Planning China without the usual rush

How many cities fit into a ten-day China trip?

Two or three major bases is realistic. Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai form a workable first route, but each added landscape region needs more transfer time.

Are high-speed trains better than domestic flights?

For many medium-distance corridors they are city-center friendly and predictable. Flights can still be practical for long cross-country jumps; compare total door-to-door time.

What should be prepared before arrival?

Confirm current entry rules, accepted payment methods, connectivity options, and reservations using official sources. These details change more quickly than the sightseeing route.
